Today (Feb. 6th) the Lake City Library hosts 'Valentines Crafts' at 1:30. Tomorrow (Feb 7th) a 'Senior Dance Around' will be held at the Community Center at high noon.
These are among the events produced by neighborhood organizations here in our community. But as we all know, getting word out about events can be a challenge in our community.
In our continued effort to keep Lake City residents connected and informed, today we debut the new Lake City Community Calendar.
This Google-based calendar features the feeds from the Lake City Library, the Lake City Community Center's new web calendar, Familes for Lake City's calendar, Lake City Neighborhood Alliance's calendar, and Douglas Park Cooperative's calendar.
While there may be a bit of overlap on some events, especially meetings, we will be working to improve the information featured here.

If you know of other Lake City community-based organizations that use Google for their calendar, let us know and we may also feature their posts on this new community calendar.

Lake City Library Calendar on DPC website

This is something we have heard from neighbors and event organizers many times. It can be difficult to know all that is going on in our own community.
People in our neighborhood are working to solve that problem.
The Lake City Library has a wonderful online calendar and we have embeded the RSS feed from their calendar on the right column of the Douglas Park Cooperative website.
To find out more about a particular event just click on the item in the RSS feed and the details will pop up. We hope to have a similar feature from the Lake City Community Center in the future. The exchange of information is an important part of what will better our community.
Update: We have also imported info from their calendar into our Google calendar featured on the right of our website. But we are unsure if it will automatically update so that is a test of the data.

Come get a Santa photo, help the Community Center

The jolly elf will make an appearance in our neighborhood coffee shop for a photo session. And you are invited.
Santa's appearance is a fund-raiser for our own Lake City Community Center. Photos with Mr. Claus will cost $10 and will be shot by a professional photographer.
He will be seated in front of the neighborhood bakery/coffee shop's giant Christmas tree.
The photos start at 2 p.m. and continue until 5:30.
All proceeds will go the Lake City Community Center and its future Youth programming.
The professional photos will be put on a CD and you can walk next door to Bartell Drugs to make your holiday cards.

Come support Olympic Hills Elementary at annual Pancake Breakfast
The fun event includes performances by the school's impressive Taiko Drummers, the Intermediate Choir and the Primary Choir.
You get all that entertainment plus a breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, juice and coffee for 6 dollars, 4 dollars for the kiddos.
Proceeds from the annual event help fund classroom field trips for Olympic Hills students.
The breakfast will be held at the Lake City Community Center and is sponsored by the Lake City Lions Club.

Funding proposed for Community Center Improvements
Seattle City Councilmembers Jean Godden, Sally Bagshaw, and Sally Clark introduced three items into the 2013-2014 City budget for possible improvements to the Lake City Community Center.
The City's budget is coming up for a hearing on Friday, November 9th.
The proposals in the City of Seattle budget shown below are not yet secured and will be discussed by the City Council in a budget hearing on Friday, November 9th. The proposals are:
- $20,000 in 2013 for the Department of Parks and Rec to conduct a services and recreation needs assessment for teens and seniors. The assessment will be done in the context of the Lake City Visioning Project. The assessment will take place in the first and second quarter of 2013 and a report will be given in the third quarter to the City Council. More info here.
- $75,000 in 2013 for architectural and engineering services to study and identify critically needed improvements. Some upgrades suggested are Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility, a possible elevator, addition of doors and windows at the back to make it accessible from the park.
- $425,000 in 2014 to make the improvements that are the outcome of the architectural and engineering review. More info here.
This funding will not be secured until the final vote
approves the money. Please write or call Seattle City Councilmembers
to express your support for these budget line items.
Update: Councilmembers Bagshaw, Godden, and Clark have just released a Statement of Legislative Intent requesting the Department of Parks and Recreation to provide a comprehensive report regarding recreational and Parks program service needs of the Lake City Urban Village and the North District Neighborhood Planning Area. The 20th annual event, organized by the Lake City Lions, Children's Home Society and the North Seattle Family Center saw a significant turnout. The Lions reported that they served pizza to over 500 people

Brainstorming: Lake City Community Center re-imagined

Wednesday night, and again on Thursday, residents of our community gathered to talk about the future of the Lake City Community Center.
Operation of the facility is shifting from Lake City LLC, which has operated the aging building for nearly 50 years. The newly renamed North Seattle Chamber of Commerce is taking over operation after the Chamber's Request For Proposal to operate the center was approved by the Seattle Parks Department. They take over in 2013.
During the meetings people brought with them ideas for the future of the facility. They suggested new programming, emphasis on already successful programming, building updates and modifications and more efficient communication with the community about events hosted there.
Below is the list of suggestions from the meeting brainstorm session. Some of these programs are already available but many in attendance did not know about them. Some are also expensive, which was acknowledged. But many are simple and would just require effort and community involvement. At this point nothing is off the table as the North Seattle Chamber makes plans for the future of the center.

- Provide rotating art display space
- Weekday, a.m. tot play time with toys
- Expand dance facility reputation, install mirrors on west interior wall, ballet bar
- Install gas insert in fireplace and use as a gathering space for story time, gathering space
- Request City of Seattle assistance with a remodel of the facility
- Remove uninviting bars on windows
- Maintain an advisory council of community members
- Remove 'smoke eaters' hanging from ceiling
- Digital reader-board to advertise events on 125th Street
- Post events on an online calendar that people can subscribe to (Google calendar)
- Construct a modular, portable and removable stage for performances
- Honor Lake City Lions contribution to our community
- Continue and expand flea market and coordinate with neighborhood garage sales
- Look into a Microsoft-sponsored game room for kids, teens
- Community classes offered such as SAT prep, ESL, etc.

- Create space for Lake City visioning project, ideas

- More international and inclusive programming for our diverse community
- Integration with Farmers Market and possible use of commercial kitchen

This Friday night, the lights will go out, goblins, ghosts, princesses and superheroes will take to the spooky streets of Lake City for the fun annual event.

After the little monsters and fairies gather treats from businesses in the Lake City business core, the festivities continue with the Lake City Lions' popular annual Fright Night Party at the Community Center. The party starts at 6:30 and continues until 8:30.
The Fright Night party features games, food, a costume contest and of course the Lake City Vigilantes absolutely terrifying Haunted House.
Th event is organized by the North Seattle Family Center. This years celebration marks Fright Night's 20th anniversary.

Re-imagine Lake City Community Center meeting Wednesday night, Thursday at noon
On Wednesday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m., the North Seattle Chamber of Commerce is hosting a public event to encourage our community to be actively involved in re-imagining the Lake City Community Center.
It was announced in late August that the North Seattle Chamber of Commerce will take over operation of the Lake City Community Center after the Chamber's Request For Proposal to operate the center was approved by the Seattle Parks Department. They will take over operation in 2013.
The meeting will be held at the Community Center, 12531 28th Ave NE.
Please stop by and provide some input on what kind of programming you would like to see in our Community Center.

'Destination Reading' youth book giveaway coming October 20th
The Lake City Lions are hosting the 'Destination Reading' free youth book giveaway on Saturday, October 20th.The program, a project of the 19B Lions Giving Library, Lions Clubs International, Lions of King & Snohomish Counties, & Lake City Lions Club offers new and gently-used books to preschool thru teenaged youngsters. The event will be held at the Lake City Community Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will also include refreshments and activities.
So come on down to the Community Center and help a kid discover the magic world that can be offered in a book.

Photos: Fun Meet at the Market brings out community organizations
Thursday's Lake City Farmers' Market had a special addition. More than a dozen groups working in our community to make Lake City a vibrant, pleasant place to live were there recruiting, informing and listening.
Organizations that hosted tables at the market have been working in unison to improve our neighborhood and make it a more pleasant place to live.
Almost all the groups are made up of volunteers and community members that care about Lake City.

New sidewalk coming to NE 130th Street
The sidewalk is being built as part of the 'Safe Routes to School' program. Many community members have been asking for a continuous route between the school and library for decades.
The $440,000 project is still in the design stage and will be unveiled to the community in the fall. But it tentatively includes a curb, sidewalk and street trees. It will be on the south side from 25th Ave NE to 28th Ave NE.
The grant also provides funding for surveys of parents and students at the school, pedestrian safety classes and education, a basics of bicycling class and a Bike Rodeo.

City: Chamber of Commerce to take over operation of Community Center
Seattle Parks Department Spokeswoman Dewey Potter announced on Wednesday that the Lake City Chamber of Commerce (now known as the North Seattle Chamber of Commerce) will take over operation of the Lake City Community Center after the Chamber's Request For Proposal to operate the center was approved by the Seattle Parks Department.
Lake City LLC, which has operated the center for nearly 50 years, will continue to operate the center until an interim agreement can be reached between the Chamber of Commerce and Parks and Rec. Lake City LLC has operated the center along with volunteers from the Lake City Lions and Lake City Vigilantes for decades.
Potter said the City Council will adopt an ordinance in early 2013 to approve the final agreement to operate the center.

Lake City and North Seattle came out to celebrate over the weekend. Pioneer Days, the 70 year-old festival honoring pioneers and the pioneering spirit, was a success this year and combined with the warm weather brought significant crowds out to enjoy our community.
The festival included the Fred Meyer Street Festival, the Rotary Kid's Parade, the Lake City Community Center Salmon Bake and Model Train Show, Seattle Gymnastics Academy's Somersault City and of course the Bill Pierre Auto Centers Grand Performance Parade.
